The Guide To Basin Sizes, Toilet Sizes & Shower Enclosure Sizes

Bathroom Fixtures Average Sizes

Getting the sizes right when fitting your bathroom is of the upmost import, especially if you aren’t working with much space. That’s why we’re breaking down everything you need to know about bathroom sizes and fixture sizes.

We will cover:

  • Bathroom Sizes
  • Basin Sizes
  • Toilet Sizes
  • Shower Enclosure Sizes

So read on and get ready for your refurbishment.

What Are The Average UK Bathroom Sizes?

The average bathroom size in the UK is just under 2000x2000mm. This average gives you plenty of room for several fixtures, including a toilet, basin and shower enclosure.

A small bathroom is typically around 1200x1200mm and naturally provides less space to work with than the average bathroom. However, with good planning and purpose built fixtures, this can be a strength, as it can make for an efficient and cosy bathroom.

Contrasting this, a larger bathroom is essentially anything north of 2000x2000mm, with a common size being and 2500x2500mm. This gives you a lot of space to do your business and decorate how you like.

Now we understand how much space we are working with, let’s look at how fixtures fit in.

Now believe it or not, there is no UK average for these sorts of things, just rough guesses. So, what we will be doing is taking the longest and shortest measurements of all of our products and working out an average so you can see the Durovin Bathrooms average fixture size and compare that to your bathroom space.

Let’s dive in!

What Are The Minimum Requirements For A Bathroom?

Ironically, a bathroom doesn’t require a bathtub. The minimum requirements for a bathroom are a toilet, a sink and a facility for full body washing, such as either a shower or bathtub. These are the three fundamental utilities needed for the full bathroom experience and every home needs at least one set.

What Are The Minimum Requirements For A Cloakroom?

Comparatively, a cloakroom only really needs a sink. Optimally, you would also have a toilet in your cloakroom. You can easily achieve this through the use of a toilet with an integrated sink, to give yourself the full cloakroom experience while saving as much space as possible.

A Guide To Basin Sizes: What Is The Standard Size Of A Basin?

So, one of the three most essential items in any bathroom is a basin. The humble bathroom sink has many forms, from pedestal basins to counter top basins, all of which take up a different amount of room.

To define our parameters:

  • ‘Height’ will be the total vertical measurement of the body
  • ‘Width’ will be the total horizontal measurement of the side of the body
  • ‘Length’ will be the total horizontal measurement of the front of the body
  • ‘Depth’ will be the total vertical measurement of the vessel within the basin

What Is The Standard Size Of A Basin?

Let’s break it down!

Length

Depth

Naturally, freestanding basins are quite large. Even the shortest one is 810mm tall. This is because they are made to stand tall enough to be comfortably used by most people. Whereas, other basins can be much shorter as they don’t have to independently stand on the floor.

It is important to keep in mind you will lose floor space, not just wall space with a freestanding basin, meaning you won’t be able to include any extra storage underneath the sink. If you’re in desperate need of extra storage, then this might not be right for you. However, if you’re looking for a statement piece that, in some cases, can stand completely independently of the wall, then the freestanding pedestal basin is for you.

As you can see, counter top basins are much shorter than freestanding basins, as they don’t need to stretch all the way up from the floor. However, they are longer on average. This extra length means if you are in the market for an extra-large, extra useful basin then these could be for you. However, if you don’t have the counter to support them, then it’s less than ideal.

Semi-recessed basins are by nature partially submerged in the surface they rest on. This means that they typically have a much shorter height than most basins, so if you don’t have much wiggle room above your counter, then this could be ideal for you. However, it is mandatory to have a surface to embed these basins in, so if you don’t have one, you won’t be able to install a semi-recessed basin.

Wall hung basins can vary in size by nature, as the only limit on their size is how much weight your wall can hold up. Because of this, they vary wildly from 370mm in length, to 1200mm in length. This variety is key to the usefulness of wall hung basins and part of their enduring charm.

As the name suggests, double basins are roughly the size of two basins. This is to provide you with extra utility and to ensure that multiple people can use the basin simultaneously, allowing for a more expedient getting ready process for all.

Naturally, this means they take up twice as much space as their counter top contemporaries, and you should consider this when choosing your basins. You wouldn’t want to pick a basin that doesn’t fit in your room!

As a contrast to double basins, cloakroom basins are designed to be as compact as possible, to ensure you can fit them in even the smallest of bathrooms. Even our longest, 495mm cloakroom basin can easily fit into a small 1200x1200mm bathroom and leave plenty of room to spare. This makes our cloakroom basins ideal for anyone tight on space.

However, if you have a larger bathroom, you may benefit from a larger basin. Afterall, there’s no point in saving space if it makes the room feel empty.

How Much Clearance Do I Need Around My Basin?

Clearance is the amount of completely clear space a fixture needs around them. A basin needs 510mm of clearance around it to make sure it is accessible and usable. However, any extra mm you can get is a bonus.

A Guide To Toilet Sizes: What Is The Standard Size Of A Toilet?

Next up is the toilets!

Much like basins, toilets come in quite the variety of shape and size, so for clarity’s sake here are our parameters:

  • ‘Height’ will be the total vertical measurement of the body
  • ‘Width’ will be the total horizontal measurement of the body when viewed from the front
  • ‘Length’ will be the total horizontal measurement of the body when viewed from the side

Now without further ado, let’s look at the data.

Close coupled toilets are the traditional form of toilet and naturally fit in most bathrooms pretty easily. Even at their widest, a 370mm toilet will easily fit into most bathrooms. However, as they have an exposed cistern, their lengths are typically longer than some of the alternatives. A 665mm long toilet may be difficult to make room for in a small bathroom when you also take clearance into consideration.

Back to wall toilets hide their cisterns in the wall, which allows their length to be much shorter than some other types of toilets. A 540mm back to wall toilet is much easier to make room for than a 665mm close coupled toilet. However, if you are unable to install the back to wall toilet’s cistern directly into the wall, then it could end up taking up even more space than usual, as you will have to build out a false wall to contain it.

Comfort height toilets are a lot like close coupled toilets, except for one major difference. They are taller. An 840mm comfort height toilet is much closer to the height of a chair than a regular toilet and because of this, is more comfortable for most to sit on. In fact, they’re even considered generally easier to sit on for taller people, elderly people and people with mobility issues.

Other than the height difference, they are very similar to a close coupled toilet, so if you can fit one, you can probably fit the other. However, it is worth keeping in mind that due to the extra height, you may not be able to install a bathroom shelf or any other kind of storage above the toilet. If you’re hurting for storage, you may be best going for a smaller toilet.

Much like back to wall toilets, wall hung toilets can save you a lot of space by embedding their cistern into the wall and equally, cost you a bit of space if you have to instead build a fake wall.

Their length is considerably shorter than a close coupled toilet, so they are well worth considering if you are low on space. Plus, the sound of their flush travels less than other toilets because they are not connected to the floor, meaning you can sleep a little easier too.

How Much Clearance Do I Need Around My Toilet?

You will need at least 609.5mm of clear space in front of your toilet, to make sure people can actually approach and access it safely.

You only need around 381mm free of clear space around the sides however, as they are typically less vital access points.

A Guide To Shower Enclosure Sizes: What Is The Standard Size Of A Shower Enclosure?

Finally, we come to shower enclosures. Showers are the modern bath and come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. So how do you even figure out what's standard?

Let's take a look!

Here's our perameters:

  • ‘Height’ will be the total vertical measurement of the body
  • ‘Width’ will be the total horizontal measurement of the body when viewed from the front
  • ‘Length’ will be the total horizontal measurement of the body when viewed from the side

As you can see, the standard height for a shower enclosure is around 1950mm, but it is the length and the width where rectangular shower enclosures really shine. A 1500x1000mm Rectangular Shower Enclosure gives you a fantastic amount of space to wash yourself and helps define the space. This might not fit smaller bathrooms; in which case it is best to look to smaller versions or different kinds of shower enclosures. However, if you have a midrange to large sized bathroom, this is a great way to give yourself some utility and presence.

Square shower enclosures are interesting as by their nature, they have the exact same length and width. This can make planning very easy. In fact, whether you choose an 800x800mm Square Shower Enclosure, 900x900mm Square Shower Enclosure or 1000x1000mm Square Shower Enclosure, you should be able to fit one into your bathroom.

Quadrant shower enclosures make planning even easier. Much like the square shower enclosures, quadrant shower enclosures have the same length and width. This means there are 800x800mm Quadrant Shower Enclosures, 900x900mm Quadrant Shower Enclosures and 1000x1000mm Quadrant Shower Enclosures that can easily fit in your bathrooms. Plus, the curving nature of quadrant shower enclosures means they take up less square footage than their contemporaries, saving you space.

A pentangular shower enclosure is a five sided shower enclosure. This is made through the use of three glass panels and two adjoining corner walls in your bathroom. It’s worth noting a pentangular shower enclosure is not a “pentangle shower enclosure”, which is more akin to a star shape.

Much like quadrant shower enclosures, pentangular shower enclosures save you a lot of space by essentially acting as a more streamlined square shower enclosure. Our 900x900mm pentangular shower enclosure and 1000x1000mm pentangular shower enclosure are great space saving showers that maintain a great amount of space inside the enclosure, while taking up little space from the actual bathroom.

Walk In Showers are a fantastic way to make your bathroom more open and modern feeling. Naturally, a walk in shower screen is quite large, at 2000mm tall. This is to ensure no water splashed out from the shower and escaped. Their width can vary massively, and we have as small as 500mm walk in shower screens and as long as 1600mm walk in shower screens. No matter the size of your bathroom, or how big you wish to make your walk in shower, we have walk in shower screens for you.

How Much Clearance Do I Need Around My Shower Enclosure?

You need 760mm of clear space around your shower. This is to make sure there are no tripping hazards around the entryway to your shower. This is especially important in this instance as the wet nature of the shower can already increase the chance of slipping. It is worth noting that you will have an easier time ensuring clearance for a shower enclosure with a sliding door, as you will not have to worry about providing clearance for the door swing.
